The Ombralus works are born from a seemingly elementary concept: finding the perfect meeting of contrasts in which light and shadow chase each other in a multidimensional game defined by the complex lines of the subjects represented.
The painting becomes material, and the audience is drawn into a full-spectrum experience that evolves with the changing external conditions. "All the variety, all the delight, all the beauty of life is composed of shadow and light": and it is precisely on this principle, summarized by Leo Tolstoy in his 1877 novel Anna Karenina, that designer Roberto Marmo's basic idea is based. This binary contrast between darkness and light—between yin and yang—gives rise to an unexpected balance, which is reflected in the stories depicted by the Ombralus artists. The points of shadow serve to highlight the light, and vice versa, thus the object comes to life and becomes the subject.
